Hip Hop Video of the Week: April 11th

The SPIT love affair with all things Wu-Tang continues, and this week we have the video of the Masta Killa song "Old Man" featuring The RZA and ODB aka Dirt McGirt aka Ol' Dirty Bastard. [Which, incidently, we played on Sunday night...see the podcast below.]

Enjoy, rapplings.

Last SPIT before Easter and The Hat's last show behind the desk at Gippy FM...for now! And did we hit it hard; The Demigodz, MOP, A.G., Ill Bill, Q-Tip, Ice-T and J-Live were all spun with viciousness as we tore through another 90 minutes of hip hop class.

So life moves on and SPIT takes a short hiatus as Comrade Pete and Sean-Bad complete the Gippy equivalent of Training Day, and I trundle up to Bendigo for Le Job. [So if any of you cats know somewhere needing a hip hop radio DJ up in that region, give us a shout out.]

Thanks to Kev and the Gippy FM crew for letting us rule the Sunday night airwaves these last few weeks. And keep your eyes peeled on the site here for updates and details as to when we go back on air.

TZU - SMILING AT STRANGERS

I actually won this CD on the quiz at therapcella.com against all odds. I received it in the mail today. And it's a pop-rock album! It's definitely an album packed with songs you'll want to hear live. I suggest going to their next gig.

As I got over the initial shock of actually listening to a pop-rock album I started to enjoy it. At least it's not your typical rap release. Produced by Magoo, who also produced Regurgitator, it's a step in a completely new direction in Oz hip-hop. The members of TZU have swapped their drum machines and samplers with a good ol' band line up.

As a "wow, we're rap artists and look, we can play instruments and make rock tracks too" type album, the new TZU CD rates all right. As an avid hip-hop-head and a patron of all kinds of music, especially four piece rock band outfits, I have to say, though, that I don't think they're pulling it off. Some songs here are quite weak.

That said, the album is worth a listen. Maybe it'll grow on me. The cool thing is that when TZU all of a sudden does this no one knows what to expect next time. They have definitely proven themselves to be more varied than the average rap group. Let the experimentation roll.

Preview: SPIT Show April 2nd

Second of the new month of April, and second last show before I trundle off to Bendigo. But as mentioned before kiddies, Sean-Bad and Comerade Pete will still be in the chair to provide you with your regular shot of hip hop in Gippy.

This week we've got joints from recent Melbourne tourists De La Soul as well as Motion Man and Kutmasta Kurt, and a tight little track featuring Canadian MC Saukrates and Mr X to the Z, Xzibit. Plus we go to Poland for the Foreign Legion track of the week, and Spot That Sample features a very well known British band named after an insect. (Yeah ok ok...you think that's easy. Now you still have to pick the song and THAT's not as simple as you expect...)

Yep, it's another action packed 90 minutes of hip hop this Sunday so come ride with us from 10.30pm.
